Green Plains, Mathews County, VAGreen Plains is a 642-acre estate located at the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. Within thirty miles of America’s Historic Triangle (Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown), it is believed to have been established in the eighteenth century with a Colonial King’s Deed. Previously owned by the Cabot family, of Boston, Green Plains was purchased by Augustus C. Long, former Texaco CEO and Chairman, in 1958.

With a diverse terrain of woods, pasture, hay meadows, and tidal wetlands, Green Plains serves as an annual stopover for waterfowl along the Atlantic Flyway. Its historic scalloped walls enclose an acre of gardens and orchards, including what is reputed to be the largest pecan tree in the United States.

Qualifications:

Fellows are expected to produce measured drawings and a written report to contribute to an archive of historic landscapes of Virginia. Applicants must be candidates for a MLA degree in landscape architecture or candidates for an equivalent academic program such as landscape or architectural history, archaeology, historic preservation, or horticulture.

Stipend:

Each Fellow will be paid a stipend of $6,000 plus certain living expenses for a three-month period
of work.
